Semarang, the capital of Central Java, is a tourist destination offering a unique blend of colonial history, cultural acculturation, and distinctive cuisine. My trip to this city aimed to explore the historical sites in the Old Town area and sample its culinary delights, which are already legendary nationally. My visit lasted three days, with the main agenda being visiting city icons like Lawang Sewu and the Sam Poo Kong Temple.

 

In terms of accessibility, Semarang is very easy to reach by both train and air. Public transportation within the city, such as the Trans Semarang bus, is quite adequate, although for flexibility, using online transportation remains the best option.

 

The Old Town area is now much more organized and clean (resembling a European atmosphere), a stark contrast to what it was a few years ago. Semarang Lumpia (lumpia) and Wingko Babat (traditional snacks) retain their authentic flavors. However, during the holiday season, queues at souvenir centers and major destinations can be very long and tiring. For me, Semarang is not just an administrative city, but an open-air museum. The harmony between ancient Dutch heritage buildings and religious sites like the Grand Mosque of Central Java and the Sam Poo Kong Temple conveys a powerful message of tolerance and cultural diversity. Being in Semarang gives the sensation of "traveling through time," where the modernity of tall buildings harmoniously coexists with well-preserved 19th-century structures.

 

Overall, a trip to Semarang is a truly memorable and educational experience. This city is perfect for travelers who enjoy history, architecture, and culinary delights. While the weather can be quite hot during the day, the hospitality of the locals and the beautiful nightlife at Simpang Lima make up for it. I highly recommend Semarang as a must-visit destination for anyone seeking a rich blend of Javanese and Chinese culture.
